Longhorn cattle are believed to have begin in Asia or Europe, and came to the Americas with the Spanish and Christopher Columbus in 1493. These ocean voyaging cattle were the first cattle populations in North America.
The English brought their own cattle to America in the 1600's, and by the early 1800's the cattle were intermingling with the Spanish breeds. Mexico and Texas became the major blending grounds for the evolution of the Texas Longhorn breed.
Some feel the big horns and speckled colors came from importation of Longhorn Herefords of England, while others believe the blue and roan speckled stock came from early Durham introductions. The Spanish influence is evident in the drab, earth tone colors. It is estimated that the modern Texas Longhorn is 80% Spanish influence, and 20% 'mongrel'.
Texas Longhorn traits were genetically fixed as a result of 'survival of the fittest', and resulted in an incredibly fit and sound animal. They multiplied by the millions, and became the most famous symbol of the Old West and Open Range
